The Moon Smells Like Gunpowder

The Moon Smells Like Gunpowder

Astronauts who walked on the moon during NASA’s Apollo missions reported a surprising discovery: moon dust has a distinct smell, like spent gunpowder. While the scent can’t be detected on the moon itself (due to the lack of atmosphere), astronauts noticed the odor after returning to their spacecraft and removing their helmets. The fine lunar dust clung to their suits and released the smell once exposed to air. Scientists believe the scent comes from a reaction between the dust’s minerals and oxygen.
